Designer Profile: Alvar Aalto

Alvar Aalto

Alvar Aalto Bio:

Often referred to as "the Father of Modernism", Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) was a Finnish designer and architect. Aalto was held in such high esteem in Finland that if he was running late for a local Finnair Flight, the airline would hold the plane and delay take off until he was safely seated on board. This happened on many occasions, and Finnish passengers grew accustomed to waiting for this famous architect and local hero. Legend has it that Aalto enjoyed this grand entrance and special treatment so much that if he arrived early or on time he would instruct his chauffeur to drive around the airport a few times until he was in fact running late!
